Daily Life.

We explored the day-to-day lives of people with learning disabilities living in Portsmouth. 13 interviewees are in relationships, 2 men are widowers, 1 woman is married, and 7 interviewees are Pompey fans.

Carly has many friends and regularly attends Abilities for Life, a social group she founded two years ago to address a gap in provision for adults with learning disabilities. She also socialises at a local youth club and attends Portsmouth FC home games as a season ticket holder.

Duane receives Mencap support in the mornings and evenings but stays at home at night. He says he would like to go out in the evenings, particularly to the cinema, but does not currently have the support to do so.

Esther enjoys creating art on her iPad and has a strong interest in history, particularly World War II and old cars. Her grandfather fought in Italy during the war, and she learns about history through museum visits, books, and films.

Finlay plays several instruments, runs a YouTube channel of song covers, and describes himself as a “celebrity.” He plans a book and film called Myself and Diva featuring a CGI chocolate Labrador, and has been supported through Family Links since age eighteen.

Holli enjoys getting tattoos, gaming, and using social media. She says her tattoos have personal meanings and help support her mental health.

Jake finds joy in working on his allotment, which he describes as hard work. He grows vegetables such as leeks, potatoes, onions, and garlic, and shares his produce with neighbours and local projects, even though he does not particularly enjoy eating vegetables.

Jeanette communicates using words, pictures, Makaton, and talking mats, and shows affection through hugging. She enjoys copying stories written by staff, likes people in uniform, attends church to pray for her mother, and lives in a care home where her life story book records trips and daily activities.

Kevin has many hobbies and an active social life. He goes to the cinema, bowling, and club nights with his gig buddy Steve, attends gaming socials, spends time with family, and regularly enjoys live music with a close friend. He loves music and looks forward to attending the Victorious Festival for the seventh time.
